About the museum
The Parco della Memoria Storica occupies the site of the old centre of San Pietro Infine, on the slopes of Monte Sambucaro, on the border of Campania, Lazio and Molise. The medieval village was destroyed in December 1943 during the battle in which American troops tried to break through the German defensive line towards Cassino and the Gustav Line (Linea Gustav). The ruins preserve the medieval street layout, with churches, bridges and walls interspersed with towers, and were declared a national monument in 2008.
The route through the park passes fourteen places of remembrance, including the church of San Michele Arcangelo, and a path leads to the Grotte della Valle, where more than 500 civilians took shelter during the bombing. The documentary “The Battle of San Pietro” by John Huston was shot here during the fighting, and the ruins served as the set for “La grande guerra” by Mario Monicelli.
The museum, designed and built by the Officine Rambaldi of Carlo Rambaldi and opened in 2008, is housed in an old olive press with seven stage-set installations and quadraphonic music, and ends with the screening of an extract from Huston's film.
