About the museum
The baths are part of the museum circuit of Bevagna and are a well-preserved example of a public complex of the 2nd century AD in the Roman city of Mevania, which was crossed lengthwise by the western branch of the Via Flaminia, whose urban route today coincides with Corso Amendola and Corso Matteotti. The baths have been known since the 17th century, when the large mosaic with sea creatures was first documented.
The main room, identified as the frigidarium (the cold bath room), had walls decorated with niches and marble slab cladding, and preserves a mosaic floor in black and white tesserae with subjects from the mythological and marine repertoire: tritons, hippocampi, octopuses, dolphins and lobsters.
Recently, other adjoining rooms have been uncovered. Two rooms with suspensurae, i.e. floors raised for heating, are probably the tepidarium and the caldarium.
