About the museum
The villa was discovered by chance in July 2005 at Sant'Anna, just outside the walls of Spello, during work for a public car park. Excavations and restoration were directed by the then Soprintendenza per i Beni archeologici dell'Umbria (heritage authority for archaeology in Umbria). The site belonged to the ancient Hispellum, a city that a rescript attributed to Constantine, datable to between 333 and 337 AD, counted among the places known for their beauty and splendour.
The residence has two building phases: one from the Augustan age and a later one, at the height of the empire's splendour, towards the end of the 2nd century AD. About 500 square metres and twenty rooms have been uncovered, ten of them with polychrome mosaic floors decorated with geometric and figurative motifs, including human figures, wild and fantastic animals and scenes of everyday life.
The rooms that open onto the peristyle take their names from their mosaics, such as the Sala degli Uccelli (Hall of the Birds) and the Sala delle Anfore (Hall of the Amphorae). The best-known room is the triclinium, with a wine-pouring scene at its centre, surrounded by the Seasons and Dionysian satyrs. A free app lets visitors see 3D reconstructions of the villa as it was two thousand years ago.
