About the museum

The Oratorio del Crocifisso belonged to the lay Confraternity of the Crucifix, active in Foligno from 1410 and officially established in 1570. The brothers devoted themselves to works of charity: they cared for the sick and the dead and supported widows, girls without dowries and the poor. At the end of the 16th century the confraternity obtained a garden next to the Dominican convent, where the oratory was built, between Palazzo Scafati Candiotti and the church of San Domenico.

The building was erected in several phases. Of the first nucleus, built between 1570 and 1642, only part of a fresco from 1626 remains, showing Saint Helena and the Finding of the Cross. From 1643 the building was enlarged with a dome and a timber ceiling painted in tempera, depicting the risen Christ among cherubim and seraphim; in the early 18th century the nave was completed and decorated under the direction of Felice Tucci.

The Baroque interior, a single nave with a sacristy and a side bell tower, was severely damaged by the 1997 earthquake. After a long restoration the oratory reopened to the public in 2015, and today it is open to visitors at set times with the support of CoopCulture.
