About the museum

The Museo civico di Bevagna is housed in Palazzo Lepri, a neoclassical 18th-century building designed by Andrea Vici, a pupil of Luigi Vanvitelli. The Comune bought the palace after the earthquake of 1832 and for more than a century it was the seat of the town hall; for this reason the building is considered the first and most important piece of the collection. The museum opened on the ground floor in 1996 and has occupied the entire palace since 2008.

The archaeological section originates from the bequest of the abbot Fabio Alberti and illustrates ancient Mevania, with Republican coins, sandstone cinerary urns of the 2nd–1st century BC and the remains of a colossal Roman statue set into the staircase. The picture gallery, formed mainly from property confiscated after Italian unification, holds works of Umbrian art from the 16th to the 18th century by artists such as Andrea Camassei, Ascensidonio Spacca known as Il Fantino, Dono Doni and Corrado Giaquinto, and a wooden model of the church of the Madonna delle Grazie by Valentino Martelli.

Among the rooms the Sala del Consiglio stands out, frescoed by Mariano Piervittori in 1867–1868 with portraits and allegories; on the third floor some rooms are dedicated to personalities born in Bevagna, including Filippo Silvestri, Mario and Agostino Mattoli and Carlo Frappi.
