About the museum
The exhibition is set up by the Parco naturale regionale delle Prealpi Giulie in Resiutta, in Val Resia and Canal del Ferro, and tells the story of the Rio Resartico mine on the northern slope of the Monte Plauris massif. For over a century the extraction of bituminous shale was one of the main sources of income for the local community. The Park authority has gathered the surviving testimonies to document the activity and the hard working conditions of the miners.
The exhibition route includes photographic panels, videos and interactive installations on the history of research and on the geological and natural aspects of the area. A full-scale reconstruction of a gallery with trolleys and a gerla (back basket) gives an idea of underground work. The exhibition is completed by rock samples, miners’ tools and a relief model of the valley showing the geological strata and galleries.
The exhibition is a starting point for hikes to the mining village of Resartico, of which partly restored ruins remain, and for guided visits organised by the Park on specific occasions. The original galleries inside the mountain are not open to the public.
