About the museum
The Museo dell'Arrotino is located in Stolvizza (Solbica), in the Municipality of Resia, and is run by the association C.A.M.A. APS, the Comitato Associativo Monumento all'Arrotino. It was set up in 1999 to document the trade of the knife-grinder, an itinerant craftsman who travelled from the Val Resia to work in many regions of Europe, especially in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The rooms display objects, tools, photographs and texts showing how the trade changed over time. Among the exhibits are grinding wheels of various sizes, the “krösme”, a wooden case with a treadle grinding wheel that the grinder carried on his back, a bicycle adapted for sharpening on the road, and antique cutting tools. The collection is completed by a large photographic archive.
The museum also offers educational workshops and events, such as the Festa dell'Arrotino held in August and the open days of Stolvizza's courtyards and museums.
