About the museum
The museum, part of the Musei di Allerona network, tells the story of the Pugnaloni, the village’s most heartfelt tradition. The Pugnaloni began as poles about three metres high with an oval cage on top, decorated with ribbons, flowers and produce from the fields; the name derives from the goad used by ploughmen. They parade through Allerona on the third Sunday of May for the feast of Sant’Isidoro, patron saint of farmers.
After the war, allegorical carts made from humble materials such as wood and clay spread, depicting scenes of rural life and the saint’s miracle. A description from 1939 recalls that the festival was organised by a committee of farmers and financed by private donations collected at harvest time.
The exhibition route includes sections on what the Pugnaloni are, on farm and craft tools and objects, on the allegorical carts and on everyday objects, with documentation, photographs of the carts and historical images of the parade.
