About the museum
The museum holds the collection gathered from the 1960s of the 20th century onwards by the parish priest Don Luigi Pellegrini, who assembled objects of popular and peasant tradition from the Serchio Valley and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. The collection was donated in 1987 to the Provincial Administration of Lucca.
The museum is housed in the medieval rooms of the former hospice (“hospitale”) of San Pellegrino in Alpe, next to the ancient sanctuary. The display, arranged in 14 thematic rooms, tells the story of rural, pastoral, craft and domestic life in the Apennine mountains, with everyday objects from the early 19th century to today and reconstructions of domestic interiors.
A large part is devoted to work: the agricultural cycles of weaving, animal husbandry, the chestnut cycle, and the traditional crafts and itinerant trades. The visit ends with the original costumes of the Maggio, a form of sung folk theatre handed down orally for generations.
