About the museum
The Molin di Bucchio stands along the road from Stia to Londa and is the first mill on the course of the Arno. Its origins date back to the 13th century; the mill belonged to the Guidi counts of Porciano and for over seven centuries was run by the Bucchi family. It remained in operation until the 1960s, when the last miller, Pietro Bucchi known as “Pietrone”, ceased his activity.
The interior has not been altered: the millstones, hoppers and horizontal paddles are preserved. A steep staircase connects the mill to the old 19th-century kitchen, with its large fireplace, flagstone floor and objects from peasant homes. The walls still bear the carvings left by the miller.
The mill is one of the places of value of the Ecomuseo del Casentino. Nearby is an ancient fish-farming installation, restored by the Cooperativa In Quiete, and throughout the year the site hosts concerts, performances, workshops and conferences. A plaque commemorates the partisan Pio Borri.
