About the museum
The museum is located in the historic centre of Stia, in the municipality of Pratovecchio Stia in the Casentino, in Vicolo dei Berignoli next to Piazza Tanucci. It is one of the venues linked to the Ecomuseo del Casentino and brings three different collections together in a single route.
The most recent section is the Museo dello Sci, opened in 2000 for the fiftieth anniversary of the Sci Club Stia, with material provided by two collectors from Arezzo. It traces the development of nordic and alpine skiing, from a means of transport for mountain residents to a sporting tool, with pieces built by users themselves and a part dedicated to races and champions.
The forest section, arranged in two rooms, shows how timber and charcoal were cut and transported in the pre-industrial era, with tools, means of transport and objects from small mountain forestry industries. The Collezione ornitologica “Carlo Beni” comprises 520 specimens of 176 Italian bird species, collected by the lawyer Carlo Beni, mayor of Stia for thirty years, in the last decades of the nineteenth century. The animals are arranged by habitat, and the collection is still in excellent condition.
