About the museum
The Museo della Memoria Locale, abbreviated MuMeLoc, is a multimedia museum in Cerreto Guidi, in the province of Florence. Its aim is to protect and make known the local cultural heritage, the historical roots of the area and the lives of its inhabitants.
At the heart of the story is one of the most dramatic episodes in local history: the Nazi-Fascist massacre of 23 August 1944 in the Padule di Fucecchio, in which 175 civilians, many of them women and children, were killed. The museum holds no objects or relics, but presents stories, voices and images through multimedia technologies, with films reconstructing historical events, testimonies and documentation on the trial of those responsible for the massacre.
Part of the route is devoted to life in the Padule, the largest inland marsh in Italy, and to the traditional trades connected with that environment, with some typical objects such as nasse (fish traps), stampe and cappellacci. The MuMeLoc is also a cultural centre with a multimedia archive, an educational workshop and an observatory of the territory; since 2026 it also houses the municipality’s tourist office. It is part of the MuDEV, the Museo Diffuso Empolese Valdelsa.
