About the museum
The museum occupies two rooms of Villa Spinola, today known as Villa Garibaldi, a 17th-century residence with frescoed ceilings in the Quarto dei Mille district. The villa belonged to Candido Augusto Vecchi, a friend and comrade-in-arms of Garibaldi, who placed it at the hero's disposal to prepare the enterprise.
From 15 April 1860 Garibaldi made the villa his headquarters, and the stages of the Spedizione dei Mille were planned here. On the night of 5–6 May 1860 part of the volunteers embarked on the steamships Piemonte and Lombardo off the coast of Quarto, and a plaque on the villa's façade commemorates the event. Nearby stands the bronze monument by Eugenio Baroni, inaugurated in 1915.
The building is owned by the Comune di Genova and managed by the Associazione Nazionale Combattenti e Reduci, which looks after its upkeep and runs the museum. The display brings together relics of the Garibaldian and Risorgimento (Italian unification) period: uniforms, medals and personal belongings of Garibaldi and his companions, letters and manuscripts on the organisation of the expedition, period firearms and documentary material extending up to the First World War.
