About the museum
The museum is dedicated to Giovanni F. Mariani, founder of the Banfi winery, and has been run by the Fondazione Banfi since 1992. It is located in the 14th-century castle of Poggio alle Mura, in the heart of the Banfi estate in Montalcino. The foundation looks after the important archaeological collections with the support of the company and under the supervision of the Soprintendenza Archeologia delle province di Siena, Grosseto e Arezzo (heritage authority for archaeology in the provinces of Siena, Grosseto and Arezzo).
Five rooms trace the history of glass production from the 5th century BC to the present, with particular attention to the link between glass and wine. The rarest core is the collection of Roman glass, considered one of the largest private collections in the field, with flasks, dishes, glasses and jugs. Also on display are antique wine bottles, elegant decanters, blown Venetian glasses and contemporary artworks, including artist-designed bottles.
