About the museum
The Galleria Civica is housed in the Palazzo Costaguta-Rocca, a 17th-century building in the historic centre of Chiavari. The palace passed to the Municipality through the bequest of its last owner, Giuseppe Rocca, and has been open to the public since 1987.
The museum can be read in several ways. It is a picture gallery, with paintings mainly from 17th-century Genoese and Flemish art, including works by Bernardo Strozzi, Valerio Castello, Bartolomeo Boscaino and Frederick van Valckenborch. It is a “museum of domestic life” (museo dell'abitare), because the architecture and furnishings preserve the layers of different periods, including the old kitchens and the technical innovations for everyday use from the early 20th century.
It is also a “museum of the city” (museo della città), where objects that arrived here after suppressions are kept, such as the 15th–16th-century ceiling from a medieval house in Via Rivarola and the Pietro Torriglia picture collection (quadreria), with works by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, known as Il Grechetto, Jan Roos, Domenico Piola, Orazio De Ferrari, Anton Maria Vassallo and others. On the ground floor of the palace is the Museo archeologico nazionale di Chiavari, while the rooms on the first floor often host temporary exhibitions.
