About the museum
The need for a place to keep local works and finds arose after the fire of the guest house in 1611 and the collapse of the central nave in 1629: the monks recovered architectural and sculptural fragments, votive panels and nativity scenes. In 1764 Abbot Iacuzio catalogued and displayed these materials in a corridor near the Cortile dei Corvi.
This first arrangement was dismantled during the suppressions, and the archaeological pieces were dispersed in the basements. After the Second World War the museum was reorganised and opened to the public in September 1968; the present layout of the rooms dates from the Jubilee of 2000.
The museum occupies about 1,000 square metres on two floors, with its entrance from the 16th-century cloister, and is divided into four thematic areas devoted to paintings, sacred vestments, marble finds and the imprint of the Madonna, as well as a permanent exhibition of nativity scenes.
