About the museum
The museum is named after Canon Giuseppe Alessi, who during his lifetime collected paintings, vases, antiquities and books. It opened in 1987 in Enna, in Via Roma, and holds the post-classical art collections of central Sicily.
The best-known section is the Tesoro del Duomo (Cathedral Treasury), with Sicilian goldsmiths’ work from the 13th to the 19th century, including necklaces, pendants, bracelets and a monstrance with Gothic-style openwork. The most important piece is the crown of the Madonna della Visitazione, described as the largest Sicilian Baroque jewel, with white-gold inlays, precious stones and six medallions with sacred scenes.
The other collections include the archaeological section, with Egyptian and Sicilian vases and objects linked to Kore and Ceres; the numismatic section, with about four thousand Greek, Roman and ancient Sicilian coins, including those minted at Henna; and a picture gallery with canvases such as the Trionfo della Fede (1602), attributed to Giuseppe Salerno.
