About the museum
The museum is housed in the historic Palazzo Varisano, in the centre of Enna, whose Baroque façade faces the cathedral. It was set up by the Sicilian Region to display materials emerging from excavations at various sites in the province, particularly in the late 1970s. Today it is part of the Parco archeologico di Morgantina e della Villa Romana del Casale.
The rooms tell the story of the forms of life in the territory and the contacts between the Sicani and Sicels and the Greeks: from the first relations with the Chalcidian colonies on the east coast to grave goods documenting a warrior class influenced by Greek culture, and local women of high rank. One section is devoted to the sanctuaries, including that of Demeter Hennaia, where the indigenous peoples also practised cults of Greek type.
Among the contexts presented are the Hellenised settlements of Cozzo Matrice, near Lake Pergusa, the tombs of Rossomanno and Calascibetta, and grave goods from Agira, Assoro, Cerami and Pietraperzia, as well as medieval materials from the area of the castle.
