About the museum
The museum is dedicated to Amedeo Bocchi (Parma 1883 – Rome 1976), a painter active mainly in Rome, close to Liberty (Art Nouveau) and the Vienna Secession. It was founded in 1999, after the artist's heirs, Rina Cabassi and Emilia Bocchi, donated a substantial core of works to the Fondazione Monteparma. The museum was set up in some restored rooms of the former Palazzo Sanvitale. Further donations followed in 2002 and 2009.
In 2015 the museum was completely rearranged in larger spaces, to display more works, and it reopened on 8 November of that year. Since 2018 the rooms have been part of APE Parma Museo, the cultural centre of the Fondazione Monteparma in Strada Farini, which also hosts exhibitions, concerts and meetings. The route continues into the rooms dedicated to Renato Vernizzi.
The collection comprises around 300 pieces: oil paintings, pastels, watercolours, drawings, sketches and some sculptures. The display follows six chronological sections, from his years of training to the portraits of his first wife Rita, the Liberty-style masterpieces with the sketches for the Council Chamber of the Cassa di Risparmio di Parma, the drawings, the portraits of his daughter Bianca and the works of his last period, produced in the solitude of Villa Strohl-Fern in Rome.
