About the museum
The urban archaeological park extends through the historic centre of Buccino, on the site of the ancient city of Volcei. Archaeological investigations began in 1980, after the damage caused by the Irpinia earthquake, and the park opened in 2003. The origins of the city go back to the construction of its walls in the 4th century BC.
The route runs partly underground and partly on higher ground, and mixes ancient structures with medieval and modern buildings. The walls follow the lie of the land at about 640 metres above sea level and have three gates: San Mauro, Sant’Elia and Consina.
Among the places in the park are the sacred area of Santo Stefano, the rock-cut complex of Via Egito, Palazzo Forcella, the temple on Via Santo Spirito, the Via Canali baths, the public area of the Roman forum and the Norman-Angevin castle. Finds from the territory are displayed in the nearby Museo archeologico nazionale di Volcei.
