About the museum
After the earthquake of 23 November 1980, the Archaeological Superintendency began investigations in the historic centre and territory of Buccino, which yielded important evidence of ancient Volcei, a Lucanian and later Roman city. These excavations gave rise to the urban archaeological park and the museum, which documents the settlements that followed one another without interruption from the 8th century BC to Late Antiquity.
The museum is housed in the former convent of the Eremitani di Sant'Agostino, considered by many scholars the oldest Augustinian foundation in the Salerno area. The cloister and the convent were rebuilt in 1473–1474 by the architect Natale da Ragusa, and after Italian unification passed to the municipality. The museum, established in 2009, is named after Marcello Gigante, a philologist and papyrologist who long championed its creation.
The route extends over four levels, covering about 1,600 square metres of restored space, with the entrance on the ground floor, rooms on the first and second floors and the exit on the ground floor.
