About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Atena Lucana is named after Elena D'Alto, a local archaeologist who made important contributions to research in the Atena area in the 1970s and 1980s. The museum offers insight into the history of Atena and the peoples who succeeded one another there.
The finds come mainly from the necropolis discovered near the present-day middle school and from the historic centre of the town, and span the period from the 4th century BC to the 1st century AD. Six grave goods are on display, a limited sample of the roughly 250 tombs explored so far, documenting the funerary customs of indigenous, Oenotrian and Lucanian peoples and the Greek influences in vessels, weapons and objects. Notable details include bronze bowls placed along the body, following an indigenous custom, a bronze Chalcidian helmet from the early 5th century BC, and a 6th-century BC tomb with a necklace of glass paste and amber and a bronze bracelet.
Roman sculptures dating to around the 1st century BC are also displayed: two male statues (one wearing a cuirass, one wearing a toga), a female bust, a funerary stele with a female inscription, and a funerary cippus with the Lucanian she-wolf from the imperial period.
