About the museum
The Museo civico “Insteia Polla” hosts the permanent exhibition “Rassegna permanente delle antiche vestiture pollesi” (permanent display of the old costumes of Polla) and is set up in the deconsecrated chapel of Santa Maria la Scala, in Polla, in the Vallo di Diano. Its aim is to tell the story of the town through the most distinctive aspect of its tradition: its folk clothing.
The display traces the development of the traditional women’s dress from the 19th to the 20th century. The Polla costume is the most distinctive of those of neighbouring towns, and local women wore it until the last quarter of the 20th century.
The exhibition is arranged according to the occasions of daily life: gala and festive dress, everyday clothing, ritual dress for processions, 19th-century semi-festive dress and mourning dress. Thirteen garments, displayed in three cases and worn by as many mannequins, reproduce the local costume with all its particularities; they were sewn with great skill using the techniques handed down by the town’s seamstresses.
