About the museum
The museum documents the pre-Roman civilisation of the Plestini, an Umbrian people who lived on the karst plateaus of Colfiorito, in the municipality of Foligno. The archaeological area of Plestia, a municipium in Roman times, covers about three hectares; excavations by the Soprintendenza archeologica dell'Umbria (Archaeological Heritage Authority of Umbria), begun in 1962, have yielded the material now on display.
The current seat in Via Plestia arose from the collaboration between the Municipality of Foligno and the Soprintendenza, and occupies 1,200 square metres on three levels. The building combines two masonry bodies, which belonged to the infirmary of the former concentration camp at Colfiorito, with a new central structure of steel and glass designed by the architect Roberto De Rubertis.
The itinerary is organised in thematic sections with panels, multimedia stations and reconstructions of excavation contexts. On the ground floor the lapidarium displays finds from the Roman city; the first floor is devoted to the pre-Roman necropolis, used from the 9th to the 3rd century BC, with grave goods and two tombs reconstructed at full size; the second floor presents settlements and sanctuaries, including the fort of Monte Orve and the sanctuary of the goddess Cupra.
