About the museum
The natural history museum is located in the headquarters of the Colfiorito Regional Park, in one of the former barracks (Casermette) of the hamlet, in the municipality of Foligno. The park protects an area of 338 hectares that includes the marsh, the Umbrian part of the Colfiorito plain and Monte Orve, and is part of a system of seven plateaus of tectonic origin, the so-called Plestine plateaus, at about 750–800 metres above sea level between the valleys of the Topino and the Chienti.
The exhibition is devoted entirely to the park and its environment. It includes insects preserved in entomological boxes, a herbarium of the marsh and stuffed animals of the plateaus, accompanied by educational panels on the biology of flora and fauna.
The area is home to many species of conservation interest, in particular migratory birds. The park headquarters also serves as a visitor centre and as a starting point for numerous hiking trails; it offers a documentation centre, a bookshop and guided tours.
