About the museum

The MAVO arises from a long collaboration between the Soprintendenza and local institutions. The Comune di Livorno Ferraris, the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio and the Musei Reali di Torino made possible an exhibition area that reconnects the territory with its heritage, housing material from the Vercellese.

The construction of the high-speed railway line between Turin and Milan, between 2001 and 2003, brought to light ancient remains previously unknown. Thanks to the methods of preventive archaeology, the Roman necropolis of Livorno Ferraris was identified, dating from the 1st to the 4th century AD. The exhibition presents not only the grave goods of Livorno Ferraris but also tells the history of the southern part of the province of Vercelli, with materials from Balocco, from the necropolis of Crescentino and from Motta de’ Conti. The route runs along the main corridor and four exhibition rooms and is accompanied by explanatory panels that relate the different contexts.
