About the museum
In 1925 the birthplace of Galileo Ferraris was donated to the municipality of Livorno Ferraris, thanks to a subscription promoted by the Associazione Elettrotecnica Italiana and by a donors’ committee chaired by Carlo Montù. The municipality undertook to set aside some rooms as a museum to collect the memorabilia and recollections of the great scientist, who was born in the town.
The building was joined to the adjacent town hall in a single complex, to a design by the engineer Mollino. In 1931 the Museo Sacrario “Galileo e Adamo Ferraris” was handed over to the podestà (the mayor under the Fascist regime). It holds documents and objects linked to the memory of the two brothers and is set up in three rooms on the first floor, including the room where Galileo Ferraris was born. The museum was renovated in 1997.
The display style, in the 19th-century manner, derives from the commemorative exhibitions held after the scientist’s death, curated above all by his pupil Carlo Montù. Among the holdings are folders of printed and handwritten scientific papers, albums of commemorations, a large photographic portrait, the funerary cast modelled by Calandra and a series of historical copies of the rotating magnetic field motor models devised by Ferraris.
