About the museum

The museum was inaugurated in 1964 to house the Pisani collection, made up of the grave goods of the protohistoric tombs of San Marzano sul Sarno. Materials from excavations carried out by the Provincial Museums in the necropolises of Pareti, in the municipality of Nocera Superiore, starting in 1957, later flowed into it, along with some finds from a civic collection in Angri.

The seat is a wing of the convent of Sant'Antonio, a building of 14th-century origin overlooking Largo Sant'Antonio. The route unfolds through a few rooms devoted to the antiquities of San Marzano sul Sarno, Angri and Scafati, to inscriptions and sculptures, and also includes Greek and Italic ceramics and, since 2019, some paintings from the convent's picture gallery.

Among the best-known objects are the statue of Athena Promachos, found in 1958 in the theatre of Pareti, and a terracotta mask personifying the river Sarno.
