About the museum
The museum takes its name from Roberto Papi, a native of Rome who devoted his life to collecting rare medical and surgical instruments. His father Mario and his brother Fernando made the collection available to the Comune di Salerno, a city tied to the history of the Scuola Medica Salernitana (Salerno Medical School).
The collection is housed in Palazzo Galdieri, in the historic centre, and extends over two levels with fourteen rooms open to the public. After renovation work, the museum reopened with an inaugural day on 16 December 2023.
The instruments, dating from the 17th to the 20th century, are arranged by speciality: anatomy, anaesthesiology, general and military surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, dentistry, obstetrics and gynaecology, otorhinolaryngology, pneumology, rehabilitation, traumatology and urology. Some rooms recreate medical settings from past eras.
