About the museum

The museum is on the first floor of the Centro Civico of Marano Lagunare, in a historic building at the start of Via Sinodo, the pedestrian street that runs through the old fortress village. It tells the millennia-long history of the Laguna di Marano, for centuries a strategic area for the passage of goods and a meeting point between the cultures of the Adriatic and continental Europe, a few miles from Aquileia.

The route runs from the pre-Roman period to modern times, using everyday objects as well as unique pieces. The displays include flint artefacts that testify to the prehistory of the area, Roman wine amphorae, a Roman tintinnabulum, 18th-century ceramic braziers (scaldini) and a sword from the period of the early Crusades recovered in the lagoon. A recent section gathers the latest finds under the title “microstorie di archeologia della laguna maranese” (micro-histories of the archaeology of the Marano lagoon).

The museum offers a visit with multimedia tablets and an educational programme developed with the Archeoscuola association: guided tours, experimental archaeology workshops, treasure hunts in the historic centre, and days when visitors can try the work of an archaeologist, an ancient kiln worker or a medieval soldier.
