About the museum
The museum’s collection began in the early 20th century on the initiative of the municipal administration: in 1906 a municipal commission began gathering finds and documents on the town’s history, also thanks to the contribution of citizens. Since 1974 the collections have been housed in the Palazzo Trevisan, in the heart of the star-shaped city.
The route follows the chronological order of the successive rulers of Palmanova: the Venetian period (from the foundation in 1593 to 1797), the Napoleonic period, the Austrian period, the uprisings of 1848 and the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866, up to the First World War. On the ground floor are historical maps, including an Austrian map showing the changes to the three circuits of walls; on the second floor are documents, coins, drawings, posters and plans, partly reproduced from originals of the Archivio di Stato, the Museo Correr and the Biblioteca Marciana in Venice, together with two 17th-century strongboxes.
Since the 1970s the museum has also held a collection of weapons and armour on deposit from the Museo nazionale di Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome, with Renaissance pieces, 17th-century arms and 19th-century sabres. The collections are completed by drawings and prints of the urban and military layout of the fortress, and by works of painting, sculpture and graphic art from the second half of the 20th century linked to the Galleria Bison and to the donation of Nelsa Desio. On request, the historical archive and the specialised library can be consulted.
