About the museum
The museum occupies the house where the Carducci family lived from 1856 to 1858, at number 29 of today's Via Carducci. The family consisted of the district physician Michele, his wife Ildegonda and their children Dante and Valfredo. The eldest son, Giosuè, a poet and future Nobel laureate, taught rhetoric at the lyceum in San Miniato and often returned home on foot, covering the eighteen kilometres that separated the two towns. The family's stay is documented by the correspondence between Michele and the municipality, kept in the municipal historical archive.
The house was turned into a museum in November 2003. On the second floor of the building is also the pre-unification historical archive of the Comune di Santa Maria a Monte, with registers and files from the mid-14th century to 1861. The house also commemorates the death of the young Dante in 1857, a painful event for the family.
Since 2007, on the occasion of the centenary of the poet's death, it has housed the “Tenero Gigante” collection by Antonio Possenti (1933–2016): twenty-six drawings and paintings dedicated to Carducci's poems, which combine literature and art with a dreamy gaze attentive to reality, from family affections to nature.
