About the museum
The civic museum, now named after the Sabina Tiberina and also known as MUSAF, was inaugurated in 2001 in Palazzo Brancaleoni, a Renaissance building on the Piazza del Duomo in the historic centre of Fara in Sabina. The present building arose from the union of several tower houses dating from the second half of the thirteenth century; the facade from the first half of the fifteenth century survives, while the interiors have been greatly altered. In one of the rooms, late Baroque grotesque frescoes survive.
The collections consist mainly of finds from excavations begun in the 1970s at two key sites for the history of the Sabina Tiberina: Cures, an ancient settlement on the left bank of the middle Tiber valley and the historical capital of the Sabina, and Eretum, in the territory of Montelibretti, from which come the rich grave goods of the Colle del Forno necropolis.
The visit route starts from prehistory and reaches the Sabine period, up to the Romanisation of 290 BC. Among the best-known pieces are the Carro del Principe from tomb XI, the terracotta throne from tomb 36 and the cippus of Cures with an archaic Sabine inscription. A single ticket also gives access to the Museo del Silenzio.
