About the museum
The museum was founded in 2001 as a dispersed museum, spread through the village of Castelnuovo di Farfa, and presents the tradition of DOP (protected designation of origin) Sabina extra virgin olive oil through a route that combines history and contemporary art.
The visit starts at Palazzo Perelli, the Renaissance town hall on Viale Regina Margherita, and goes down to an eighteenth-century oil mill which shows how olives were pressed using the strength of animals. The route continues through the village, passing an ancient public bakery oven and the remains of the medieval church of San Donato.
At each stop contemporary artists have created installations that reinterpret the culture of oil. A walk through the countryside leads to a garden of olive varieties.
