About the museum
The Centro di documentazione del territorio, named after the archaeologist Riccardo Francovich, was founded in 1994 in the historic centre of Scarlino, in the area of the Rocca. It holds the materials found in the excavations carried out at the Rocca Aldobrandesca between 1979 and 1983 under Francovich's direction; he was one of the leading figures of medieval archaeology in Italy.
The route unfolds across three small rooms with explanatory panels and display cases. The finds cover a very long period, from the Bronze Age to the 17th century: remains of a protohistoric settlement, Hellenistic walls and an early medieval settlement, together with numerous everyday objects.
Among the best-known pieces is the “tesoro di Scarlino” (Scarlino treasure), about a hundred gold coins of the 14th century from seven different mints, found in a vessel hidden in the wall of the rectory of the Rocca. The centre also offers educational workshops and excursions by reservation.
