About the museum

The documentation centre was inaugurated on 22 May 2009 to illustrate the Etruscan presence in the territory of Scarlino, following the excavations that brought to light the archaeological area of Poggio Tondo, in the Pian d'Alma area. It is in the historic centre, in an old cellar of a palace of medieval origin that belonged until the last century to the Guelfi family.

The small museum is set out in two rooms with explanatory panels. The first documents the Etruscan presence across the whole municipal territory: the burial area and farm of Poggio Tondo, the Alma valley, the Puntone and the rocca (fortress) of Scarlino. At the centre is the main piece, a bronze element of a horse harness found among the ruins of the canonical house of San Michele.

The second room presents, in four display cases, the finds from the tombs of the Poggio Tondo necropolis, datable between the mid-7th and mid-6th centuries BC and linked to the Etruscan city of Vetulonia: Tomba del Tamburo, Tomba del Cippo, Tomba delle Due Porte and Tomba del Carro, with bucchero vases, toilet objects, ornaments and weapons.
