About the museum
The history of the museum begins in the 1980s, when the Municipality of Nepi, at the urging of the local Archeoclub, set up a storage facility for cultural heritage to hold the archaeological material of the area. In 1992 the Archaeological Heritage Authority (Soprintendenza) for Southern Etruria organised with the Municipality the exhibition “Le necropoli di Nepi”; part of the material went into the first display of the Civic Museum, which opened to the public regularly from June 1995 in the Sala Nobile of the Palazzo Comunale.
After a temporary move to the basement rooms of the palace, from 2003 the Municipality began, on the basis of a new scientific project, to redevelop large spaces in the historic building next to the Palazzo Comunale, where the museum is now housed. The exhibition tells the story of the town and its surroundings in three sections: protohistoric and pre-Roman, Roman, and medieval and Renaissance. The most distinctive core consists of material from the Faliscan necropolises (7th–4th century BC); the Roman section includes, among other things, a marble head of Augustus, stolen in the 1970s and recovered in 2016.
