About the museum
Opera Bosco – Museo di Arte nella Natura opened in 1996 and has been part of the Organizzazione Museale Regionale del Lazio (Lazio regional museum network) since 1997. It is an open-air museum-workshop of contemporary art across three hectares of woodland within the Parco Valle del Treja, in the territory of Calcata.
The artists extend the concept of aesthetics to the ecosystem, using only the raw natural material of the woodland. The works live in symbiosis with the landscape and form a route of permanent installations built up over decades, with the contribution of hundreds of artists and as part of educational workshops with students from fine-arts academies in residence. The installations are designed to age and decay naturally.
Since its foundation, Opera Bosco has organised interdisciplinary seminars, exhibitions and concerts in its three open-air theatres and in the documentation and exhibition space Cave Cave in the historic centre of Calcata. It received a mention in the Council of Europe’s Premio del Paesaggio (landscape prize) from 2010 to 2015, took part in the Biennale di Architettura di Venezia in 2014 and the Biennale d’Arte in 2015, and was proposed for UNESCO World Heritage status in 2019.
