About the museum
The museum is located in Locri, in Palazzo Nieddu del Rio, a historic building in the town centre. It presents evidence of life in the area in the protohistoric period, from the necropolises of Canale Ianchina in the Locri hinterland, Sant'Onofrio di Roccella and Santo Stefano di Grotteria, and from the Greek period, with new finds from the excavations linked to the modernisation of the SS 106 road.
On the first floor, one section houses the private collections that were donated to the museum. A second, larger section presents the finds discovered along the new SS 106 between the fiumare (seasonal watercourses) Torbido and Condoianni, from the 2nd millennium BC to the 2nd century BC. Two Hellenistic barrel-vaulted tombs, found intact and reassembled in the museum, are on display, together with the remains of a Greek-period settlement (7th–4th century BC) at Canneti, on the outskirts of ancient Locri Epizefiri, including part of a boat and traces of rituals.
