About the museum
The Gerace diocesan museum was established in 1996 to preserve, enhance and make known the historical and artistic heritage from the concathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and from the Gerace area. The route presents works and liturgical furnishings dating from the 12th to the 20th century.
Among the most important pieces is the gilt-silver stauroteca (reliquary of the True Cross), set with hardstones and beads, brought to Gerace by Bishop Atanasio Calceopoulos in the 14th century but generally attributed to the 12th century, perhaps made in Jerusalem or in the Norman workshops of Sicily. Also on display are the chalice of 1726 of Monsignor Diez De Aux, the work of a Sicilian silversmith in filigree and hardstones, the silver bust of Saint Veneranda with the monogram of Gregorio Juvarra, and the silver sculpture of the Immaculate Conception of 1772, commissioned by Bishop Scoppa.
