About the museum
The palazzo that houses the museum was built around 1565 by Bishop Andrea Candida as a seminary. Over the centuries it changed use several times: infantry barracks, courthouse and prison, carabinieri barracks, primary school and temporary municipal offices.
Since 2010 the building has housed the civic museum, named after Salvatore Gemelli, a great admirer of the town. The display was created in collaboration with the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici della Calabria (heritage authority for archaeology in Calabria) and is arranged in five rooms.
The main core consists of finds excavated in 1970–1972 in the contrade of Monserrato and Stefanelli and in neighbouring areas, in particular the grave goods of the Stefanelli necropolis. The route also includes a section of the floor of the church of San Francesco, made of 17th-century Gerace ceramic tiles, and an exhibition of lithographs of Calabrian landscapes by Edward Lear, who stayed with the Scaglione family in 1847.
The museum also serves as a tourist information centre on behalf of the municipal administration.
