About the museum

Locri Epizefiri was founded at the end of the 8th century BC by Greek settlers on the Ionian coast of Calabria and is still partly unexcavated. The national museum, inaugurated in 1971, stands within the archaeological area, near the votive deposit of Zeus fulminante, and holds the materials from the most recent excavations. The finds from the first campaigns are displayed instead at the Museo nazionale della Magna Grecia in Reggio Calabria.

The route is spread over two floors with a topographic display, that is, arranged by place of discovery. On the ground floor are the materials of the Magna Graecian polis, from the Lucifero necropolis to the sanctuary of Persephone at Mannella, from the architectural terracottas of Centocamere to the sacred area of Marasà, and the elements of the theatre. On the first floor are finds predating Greek colonisation, from the Iron Age, together with objects from the Hellenistic and Roman periods and a collection of coins.

The archaeological park surrounding the museum includes, among other things, the Ionic temple of Marasà, the Thesmophorion, the theatre, the sanctuary of Zeus and the Centocamere quarter. The complex also includes the Casino Macrì, a 19th-century building that houses a Roman bath installation. Since December 2014 the site has been run by the Ministry of Culture, first through the Polo museale della Calabria and, from December 2019, through the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Calabria.
