About the museum
The Museo Archeologico di Peccioli, part of the museum hub of the Fondazione Peccioliper, holds finds from the municipal territory, in particular from the Etruscan site of Ortaglia and the archaeological area of Santa Mustiola. In 2022 it was recognised as a museum of regional and then national importance.
The museum occupies the former cellars of the castle of Peccioli, underground rooms that may date back to the Etruscan period. The Etruscan section displays materials from the Ortaglia sanctuary, active between the 6th and 3rd century BC: votive objects, ritual implements and Attic pottery imported from Greece, among which stands out a red-figure kylix probably attributed to the painter Makron. There is also the grave goods of a Hellenistic tomb discovered at Legoli.
The Roman, Late Antique and medieval section presents the finds of Santa Mustiola, a place of commercial transit between the 1st and 3rd century AD, later occupied by the Lombards and, after the year 1000, the site of a small church with a cemetery. Among the funerary goods stands out the so-called Cintura di Isadora (Isadora’s belt), a restored bronze object that belonged to a young woman who died in the mid-14th century.
