About the museum
The Museo della Civiltà Contadina di Montefoscoli was inaugurated on 16 April 1996 by a group of local volunteers and is housed in the cellars and storerooms of Palazzo Vaccà Berlinghieri. It was first managed by the Comitato di Promozione Culturale di Montefoscoli; today it is run by a volunteer association that bears the name of the museum and aims to preserve and pass on the memory of rural civilisation.
The route displays a large number of tools that document the post-medieval “archaeology of rural activities” and describes the stages of sharecropping life and of the relationship between landowner and sharecropper between the 18th century and the early decades of the 20th century: grape harvesting and pressing, sowing, harvesting and storing grain, and olive milling. The visit also includes carts, the blacksmith’s forge, the household laundry and the carpentry workshop for tools, barrels and carts.
In 2005 the opening of the Casa Museo Vaccà Berlinghieri expanded the museum, turning it into a centre of local history in the modern and contemporary periods: objects and documents recall the political, social and economic role of the Berlinghieri family and their relations with prominent figures of the time. The museum is part of the Rete museale della Valdera (Valdera museum network).
