About the museum
The museum was opened on 25 October 2009 at the wish of the municipal administration and the parish of San Verano, in collaboration with the Soprintendenza. It is housed in the chapel of the Assunta, built from 1580 to host the confraternity of the same name and the subject of an important restoration, within the Romanesque pieve of San Verano.
Among the most significant works are two well-preserved examples of 13th-century Tuscan painting: a Madonna and Child attributed to Enrico di Tedice, known as the Madonna delle Grazie because of the particular devotion surrounding it, and a panel with Saint Nicholas and scenes from his life, attributed to Michele di Baldovino. Also on display are a wooden crucifix from the 1330s, attributed to the Sienese school of Giovanni Pisano, a Sacra Conversazione by Neri di Bicci from 1463, and an Assumption with angels and saints by Giovanni Bilivert from 1628.
The collection also includes a canvas with Saint Peter attributed to Giovan Battista Piazzetta, donated to the museum at its inauguration, and various pieces of sacred goldsmiths' work, including a mid-15th-century chalice attributed to a Sienese workshop close to Sano di Pietro.
