About the museum
The museum displays finds from the excavations carried out since 2001 by the University of Pisa in the archaeological area of San Genesio, between the localities of Ponte a Elsa and La Scala, in the municipality of San Miniato. A settlement stood here, founded along the ancient Via Quinzia between Pisa and Florence and later on the route of the Via Francigena.
The Antiquarium documents the entire life of the site, from the 3rd–2nd century BC to the 14th–15th century: from an Etruscan funerary cippus to material from the Etruscan necropolis of Fonte Vivo, from the Roman period to late antiquity, and from the Lombard period to the Vicus Wallari of the 8th century, an important commercial, religious and political centre that hosted imperial diets in the 12th century. In 1248 the village of San Genesio was destroyed by the people of San Miniato.
The route includes the crypt of the ancient pieve of San Genesio, with three apses and cross vaults supported by sixteen sandstone columns, the foundations of which are still visible. The museum also houses the material from the former archaeological museum of San Miniato.
