About the museum
The Museo Diocesano d’Arte Sacra di San Miniato was founded in 1966 on the initiative of local bodies and personalities and thanks to the interest of Professor Dilvo Lotti. It was one of the first diocesan museums in Italy. It is housed in Piazza del Duomo, in premises that once housed the sacristies of the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and San Genesio, a building of very ancient origin that took on its present appearance around the 12th century, when San Miniato was in the orbit of Frederick II.
The five rooms hold about fifty works from various parishes of the diocese, arranged in chronological order from the 13th to the 19th century: detached fresco fragments, wooden panels, bas-reliefs, wooden statues, bronze crosses, ceramic bowls, canvases and a scale model of the church of the Santissimo Crocifisso.
Among the names represented are Lorenzo Monaco, Giroldo di Jacopo da Como, Agnolo di Polo (a pupil of Verrocchio), Cigoli, Empoli, Lorenzo Lippi, Bilivert and Giambattista Tiepolo. The museum also offers a visit to the nearby Torre di Matilde, the cathedral bell tower.
