About the museum
Teanum Sidicinum was founded around 343 BC as the capital of the Sidicini, an Italic people, and was regarded by the ancients as second in importance only to Capua among the great inland cities of Campania. The museum, opened on 12 March 2001, documents its history through the finds from the excavations of the ancient centre and the territory.
The seat is the Loggione e Cavallerizza complex, a late Gothic building of the 14th century built by the Marzano family for civil and political functions, on the site of the medieval upper castle. Over time it housed a school, a court and a stable; from 1937 the rooms on the ground floor served as a cinema and theatre for about forty years, until the restoration that turned them into a museum.
The display, arranged by find context, is divided into seven rooms: from the first traces of life in the area to the age of the villages (8th–4th centuries BC) and the age of the city (3rd century BC–7th century AD). Since December 2014 the museum has been run by the Ministry of Culture, and since 2019 through the Regional Directorate of Museums.
