About the museum
The museum in Monteleone Sabino gathers finds from the area of the ancient centre of Sabine origin, Trebula Mutuesca, and offers a historical and archaeological route from the pre-Roman period to the Middle Ages. The town is mentioned by ancient authors such as Virgil, Strabo and Pliny the Elder. The museum is part of the Organizzazione Museale Regionale del Lazio, the regional museum network of Lazio.
In the main hall, visitors are greeted by a funerary lion in limestone from the 1st century BC, which once guarded the entrance to a Roman tomb. Panels illustrate the geology and history of the area. For the pre-Roman period, the most important evidence concerns cult practices, in particular the worship of the goddesses Angitia and Feronia, with terracotta votive offerings and miniature objects from the votive deposit near the church of Santa Vittoria. Among the Roman sculptures stand out a relief of a victorious gladiator and a gladiatorial combat scene.
The second room is dedicated to the amphitheatre, which was restructured under the emperor Trajan: on display are fragments of bronze and marble statues, coins, everyday objects and, at the centre, the large monumental inscription of the emperor. The route ends with the inscriptions section and the area dedicated to Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, linked to the cult of Saint Victoria (santa Vittoria) and the origins of the village. The Roman amphitheatre can be visited in the archaeological area.
