About the museum
The wildlife museum of the monk seal is located in Cala Gonone, a hamlet of Dorgali on the Gulf of Orosei, inside the Centro di Educazione Ambientale (CEA/CEAS) on Viale Bue Marino. The Mediterranean monk seal, called “bue marino” (sea ox) by locals, once frequented the caves of this stretch of coast, including the famous Grotta del Bue Marino.
The route displays around 300 stuffed specimens of Sardinian fauna, arranged in dioramas, which are reconstructions of natural habitats. The display of the stuffed animals is divided into several areas of interest, designed with particular care for visitors. The first section one meets is the one on birds of prey and the birds of the Supramonte.
The cave room, dedicated to the monk seal, is very atmospheric, and visitors can see a family of seals. The museum forms part of the environmental education activity of the CEAS of Dorgali and Cala Gonone, aimed at schools, families and groups.
